If welfare stigma depends upon social attitudes, only the neediest apply for when they can more easily be seen to do so. Using GoogleMaps' ‘StreetView' feature, this article finds that approval rate of applications assistance is higher in offices with building characteristics enhance visibility entry. A fitting explanation finding persons looking dislike being thought as ‘welfare cases', and conservatively others see it. The effects decline poverty, suggesting self-reliance norm weakens poverty increases.
